What was once known as a small port town is now a vibrant coastal community, welcoming travellers of all ages. Darwin Australia is chock-full of natural wonders, fantastic attractions, and has a cultural vibe to rival any big city!
Named after Charles Darwin, it's the capital city of the Northern Territory. It's also fairly close to the beautiful Tiwi islands, which are about 80km north.
Darwin's culture events and festivals are plentiful in the city, and no wonder: it has the largest proportional population of aboriginal Australia out of any capital city. A whopping 75 nationalities also make up the population of Darwin Northern Territory.
Travel in the region is made much easier if you consult a map of Darwin and environs. Although they're a bit further away, it's well worth visiting the Kakadu National Park and the world-famous Uluru (Ayers Rock). The Ghan offers a unique way of travelling in the Territory - it's a train service that connects Alice Springs with Darwin and Adelaide.
Other Darwin natural attractions to check out include the Lichfield National Park, which is full of crystal-clear rock pools and breathtaking waterfalls.
Darwin weather shouldn't get in the way of exploring - the weather is quite tropical, with quite distinct wet and dry seasons. Cyclone Tracey was devastating to much of the area over 30 years ago, but nowadays the city is back to its former glory.
